Skullbriar, the Walking Grave, Blade of the Bloodchief and boardwipes

Asked by Bobgalarneau 12 years ago

In an EDH game, if Skullbriar, the Walking Grave is a commander and is equiped with Blade of the Bloodchief, some creatures are on the battlefield and there is a boardwipe, lets say Damnation. Does skullbriar receive +1/+1 counters?

From my understanding, damnation resolve, killing all creatures. It triggers the blade's effect many times, but the blade is not equiped anymore so it can't put counters on anything. Am i correct?

That's right. Though Blade of the Bloodchief triggers many times, there's no "equipped creature" when those triggers resolve, so nothing happens.

The Blade's ability will trigger once for each creature that dies, including Skillbriar. But when it resolves, the equipped creature won't be on the battlefield, so the ability won't be able to put any counters on it. Only permanents can have counters placed on them, with a few exceptions like suspended cards, so even though Skullbriar keeps his counters when he's not on the battlefield, he can't have any placed on him then.
