Asked by runelord 13 years ago
if a creature has shroud can you put equipment on it or does equipping count as a targeted ability
I thought so but I was hoping there was some sort of loophole i didn't know about. Thanks for the help

Still,i just learned yesterday evening that, for example,if you got Sun Titan ,Claustrophobia in your graveyard and Geist of Saint Traft as an opponent's creature and attack with the first one,you can take back your Claustrophobia from the graveyard and automatically assign it to Geist of Saint Traft . Is this true?

@Lowmar: Yes, that's true. Auras only target the thing they're being attached to when they're cast as spells, not when they're put onto the battlefield some other way. This allows you to "cheat" auras onto things with shroud or hexproof, but it can't be used to get around protection, because one of the rules of protection specifically disallows enchanting.

i would say no because, the Claustrophobia once returned to the battlefield would go through it's process as if you had just casted it, thus needing to target the Geist of Saint Traft . However if you want further clarification i would post your own question to get more views.

well I guess I'm wrong and a minute late in posting. I still think it is worth posting as a question to hopefully get some reference from the rules compendium.

@Lowmar i saw this on mtgsalvation

sum:
"303.4f If an Aura is entering the battlefield under a players control by any means other than by resolving as an Aura spell, and the effect putting it onto the battlefield doesnt specify the object or player the Aura will enchant, that player chooses what it will enchant as the Aura enters the battlefield. The player must choose a legal object or player according to the Auras enchant ability and any other applicable effects.
So, if the Aura is entering the battlefield from the graveyard, it is not targeting the creature and can therefore attach to a creature with Hexproof."
That came from WotC. Since Claustrophobia just says "enchant creature" not target creature, then it can go onto the geist

Rhadamanthus is right
To clear things up, here's the ruling
303.4f If an Aura is entering the battlefield under a players control by any means other than by resolving as an Aura spell Sun Titan in this matter">b[/b], and the effect putting it onto the battlefield doesn't specify the object or player the Aura will enchant, that player chooses what it will enchant as the Aura enters the battlefield. The player must choose a LEGAL OBJECT b[/b] or player according to the Auras enchant ability and any other applicable effects.
Since Geist of Saint Traft is a legal object when Sun Titan recurs any aura, Sun titan can cheat an aura onto a Hexproof creature, since it is not a targeting effect. However as Rhadamanthus said it cannot get around protection (see ruling on protection 702.14c)

I see... this is intresting. So there is a way to shut Hexproof creatures too. I must say Sun Titan is relieved in this case.

702.16a Shroud is a static ability. Shroud means This permanent or player cant be the target of spells or abilities.
702.6a Equip is an activated ability of Equipment cards. Equip [cost] means [Cost]: Attach this Equipment to TARGET creature you control. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.
So in other words, to equip something to a creature, you must target the creature, so a creature with shroud can't be equipped!
