Several questions

Asked by Pixonova 11 years ago

Hi there!

My friend and I have been experimenting with our new decks and we encountered a play where we were both confused.

I had a Desecration Demon , and Archangel of Thune out on the field. I swung with both of them, and my friend blocked DD with Herald of Torment . Then he proceeded to Bile Blight after declaring blockers and said that he wasn't sure if Desecration Demon died or not because of Thune being out.

So the first question, would DD die to the Bile Blight?

Second question:

Last round at FNM. I was playing a naya deck. I cast Lifebane Zombie . Looked into his hand and he had Loxodon Smiter . I told him to keep his hand because he reminded me of smiter's ability. After he beat me, I remembered LZ'S ability says exile. Would that trigger Loxodon?

As to your first question, I'm assuming he meant that he thought Desecration Demon would get a +1/+1 counter on it due to Archangel of Thune . The Desecration Demon would die. Due to Bile Blight giving it -3/-3, and Herald of Torment dealing three damage, it would become a 3/3 with three damage on it. It would die the next time state-based actions are checked, before the Archangel of Thune 's ability would resolve.

The answer to your second question is no. Exile and discard are two different things. Even if it was exiled from the hand with Lifebane Zombie , Loxodon Smiter 's ability wouldn't trigger because that's not discarding.

A triggered ability (starts with "when/whenever/at") doesn't resolve immediately after it triggers. It gets put onto the stack and players can respond to it before it resolves. This means that while Archangel of Thune 's counter-adding ability is still on the stack Desecration Demon is a 3/3 with 3 damage marked on him. He'll be destroyed for lethal damage.

Loxodon Smiter only interacts with effects that would specifically cause him to be "discarded". Lifebane Zombie doesn't make a player "discard" anything. Also, if you see something that can be chosen with Lifebane Zombie you can't decide not to choose anything. This isn't a "search" effect, so you can't "fail to find" a card in the revealed hand (and it's not a "may" effect either).

The Desecration Demon would be affected by both Bile Blight and combat damage before the archangel's trigger resolved.

If it had no other counters on it, it would die.

you are correct, exile and discard are different, Loxodon Smiter 's ability wouldn't apply in that scenario.

However, you can't fail to find in a person's hand. It's an illegal action. You HAD to exile a Green or white creature if there was on that you can exile.
