Rule check... Atheros God of Passage/Deathrite Shaman

If you have Athreos, God of Passage out and your opponent has Deathrite Shaman out.. can they exile a killed creature before they have to pay the 3 from Ahreos, God of Passage and thus negate the ability?
Yes. Same thing with Scavenging Ooze . Those two cards absolutely hose Athreos, God of Passage .
FYI rules questions should be asked in the MTG Q/A. This will get moved to the blind eternities.

Rules questions should be asked in the Q&A, which is linked in the header bar. I can't convert this to a question thread, so it's going to the orphanage.
Yes. Athreos, God of Passage 's ability triggers as soon as the creature dies, and it will be put onto the stack before players have a chance to do anything. Your opponent won't be able to prevent the trigger. However, he or she can exile the creature card in response to Athreos, God of Passage 's ability, then choose not to pay any life when Athreos, God of Passage 's ability resolves. The creature card will remain exiled either way.
