Rites of Flourishing / Jace's Erasure
Asked by cytek 13 years ago
I'm sorry, but I'm very new to magic. I'm trying to understand how this works. If you have 2 copies of Rites of Flourishing , do I draw 3 or 4 cards? If I have 3 of them out is it 4 or 8? Also, if you have Jace's Erasure out and you say play Divination , does the opponent mill 2 more cards? 4 if I have 2 Jace's Erasure 's?
Hope these questions make sense. I think I'm confused even trying to ask them.
If you have two copies of Rites of Flourishing out, you will draw an extra card for each copy's effect, so you would draw 3 cards each player's upkeep.
If you have one copy of Jace's Erasure in play and you cast Divination , then target player will mill 2 cards. If you have two copies of Erasure out, target player would mill 4 cards, 2 for each copy.
Hope this helps.

The part that confused me on Jace's Erasure was the phrase "whenever". I thought I could make them mill when I took my normal draw and then if I played something that caused a draw they would draw again. It appears though that I can't, but I can decide not to have them do it on the first draw and I can pick when I want them too.

"Whenever" is just an indicator word. Abilities that begin with "At..." or "Whenever..." or "When..." are triggered abilities. The clause following the introductory/signal word tells you when and how often the ability can/will trigger.

Also, Jace's Erasure triggers once for every card you draw, no matter when you draw it. You can make someone mill for your normal draw and again if you draw additional cards later on.

You choose if you wish to mill them then, though note that though you choose if you want them to mill, you always have to choose a target for the ability (it will always trigger, but you choose if it actually does something when it "resolves")
and then if I played something that caused a draw they would draw again.I think you meant they would mill again. Which is correct. If you draw outside your normal draw for the turn, it will also trigger Jace's erasure, and allow you to mill them again.Jace's erasure has a triggered ability that triggers when you draw a card. So anytime you draw a card, for any reason, you can make them mill. Also note that Draw 3 cards is treated as "Draw 1 card, draw 1 card, draw 1 card" so it would trigger the erasure 3 times.
It appears though that I can't, but I can decide not to have them do it on the first draw and I can pick when I want them too.If you are thinking you can only mill them once per turn (if you are unfamiliar with the term mill, it means make them put X cards into their graveyard from their library) then no, I'm afraid not. You can mill them once per card you draw (twice if you have two erasure's out, 3 times if you have 3, etc) it is not limited to once per turn.

OK...wow...I think I'm going to love milling people now. I was so confused. I really did think it was only once per turn. Thanks guys for the answers....this totally changes how I was looking at this.

Rites of Flourishing
has a triggered ability. The ability "draw a card" goes onto the stack once for each Rites of Flourishing for each draw step. This means that the net result of multiple Rites of Flourishings is cumulative, not multiplicative. Each player will draw one additional card for each Rites of Flourishing in play.
Jace's Erasure
also has a triggered ability. The ability "target player mills one" (I'm using the slang wording) goes onto the stack once per Jace's Erasure for each card you draw. If an effect causes you to draw multiple cards at once, each Jace's Erasure you control will trigger that many times.
For example, if you cast Divination
with one Jace's Erasure in play, you would get two triggers. If you had two Jace's Erasures, you would get four triggers.
