Riptide Replicator legal token types

Asked by deadmanwalking 13 years ago

What constitutes a legal choice of creature type for Riptide Replicator , and card:Volrath's Laboratory? Does it have to be elf, goblin, citizen, any of the types Mistform Ultimus is, or can it be something like chair, pineapple, Deadmanwalking, Charles Darwin?

Basically, do I have to chose an official creature type, like the one's that changelings and Mistform Ultimus are, or can I make one up?

You have to pick real creature types, of which there are many. It is important to note though, that picking "Changeling" or "Wall" or any other type doesn't carry any rules functionality with it: You can't name Red Changeling and then tap it to make creatures that have all creature types.

The changelings from Lorwyn had static effects that gave them all creature types, but the changeling type itself is just as meaningful as Vampire or Goat. Walls are in a similar boat: Any rules saying that walls can't attack were changed long ago and all walls were errata'ed to have Defender when applicable.

Here is the list of legal types for you to name:

204.3k. Creatures and tribals share their lists of subtypes; these subtypes are called creature types. The creature types are Advisor, Ally, Angel, Anteater, Antelope, Ape, Archer, Archon, Artificer, Assassin, Assembly-Worker, Atog, Aurochs, Avatar, Badger, Barbarian, Basilisk, Bat, Bear, Beast, Beeble, Berserker, Bird, Blinkmoth, Boar, Bringer, Brushwagg, Camarid, Camel, Caribou, Carrier, Cat, Centaur, Cephalid, Chimera, Citizen, Cleric, Cockatrice, Construct, Coward, Crab, Crocodile, Cyclops, Dauthi, Demon, Deserter, Devil, Djinn, Dragon, Drake, Dreadnought, Drone, Druid, Dryad, Dwarf, Efreet, Elder, Eldrazi, Elemental, Elephant, Elf, Elk, Eye, Faerie, Ferret, Fish, Flagbearer, Fox, Frog, Fungus, Gargoyle, Germ, Giant, Gnome, Goat, Goblin, Golem, Gorgon, Graveborn, Gremlin, Griffin, Hag, Harpy, Hellion, Hippo, Hippogriff, Homarid, Homunculus, Horror, Horse, Hound, Human, Hydra, Hyena, Illusion, Imp, Incarnation, Insect, Jellyfish, Juggernaut, Kavu, Kirin, Kithkin, Knight, Kobold, Kor, Kraken, Lammasu, Leech, Leviathan, Lhurgoyf, Licid, Lizard, Manticore, Masticore, Mercenary, Merfolk, Metathran, Minion, Minotaur, Monger, Mongoose, Monk, Moonfolk, Mutant, Myr, Mystic, Nautilus, Nephilim, Nightmare, Nightstalker, Ninja, Noggle, Nomad, Octopus, Ogre, Ooze, Orb, Orc, Orgg, Ouphe, Ox, Oyster, Pegasus, Pentavite, Pest, Phelddagrif, Phoenix, Pincher, Pirate, Plant, Praetor, Prism, Rabbit, Rat, Rebel, Reflection, Rhino, Rigger, Rogue, Salamander, Samurai, Sand, Saproling, Satyr, Scarecrow, Scorpion, Scout, Serf, Serpent, Shade, Shaman, Shapeshifter, Sheep, Siren, Skeleton, Slith, Sliver, Slug, Snake, Soldier, Soltari, Spawn, Specter, Spellshaper, Sphinx, Spider, Spike, Spirit, Splinter, Sponge, Squid, Squirrel, Starfish, Surrakar, Survivor, Tetravite, Thalakos, Thopter, Thrull, Treefolk, Triskelavite, Troll, Turtle, Unicorn, Vampire, Vedalken, Viashino, Volver, Wall, Warrior, Weird, Whale, Wizard, Wolf, Wolverine, Wombat, Worm, Wraith, Wurm, Yeti, Zombie, and Zubera.

You can't make up a random type. I believe you can create tokens of any creature type that has been printed before (other then maybe the "un" sets).

You cannot copy anything to do with Mistform Ultimus . His type would basically come into question if a spell was cast that affects a creature type, like how Adaptive Automaton or Halo Hunter are creature examples. He is an illusion, and that is his type.

As an addendum, the rule that says you must pick a real type:

204.3d. If an effect instructs a player to choose a subtype, that player must choose one, and only one, existing subtype, and the subtype he or she chooses must be for the appropriate card type. For example, the player can't choose a land type if an instruction requires choosing a creature type.

ultimus was just an example of something that had every creature type, not some sort of loophole. Thanks though guys, that's what I figured, but I wanted to make sure. I guess I can't make a microwave deck after all :(

Uncle Istvaan used to be a legal creature type.

Worst rules change ever.

Ali Baba , El-Hajjaj , Ali from Cairo , Aladdin , King Suleiman , Singing Tree and a few others were my favorites. Basically, anything from Arabian Nights that would have become a legend in Ledgends onwards was a unique creature type. I hate that rule...
