Reverberate and Fling

Asked by Wizard of the Damned 13 years ago

Need to get a ruling on an interaction here. Say I Fling a creature for 4 damage and Reverberate it, I have to pay the additional cost of the creature for the reverberate right? Sacing the additional creature?

No. You do not cast the copy made by Reverberate . Rather, the copy is created on the stack under your control. If Reverberate specifically stated that you cast the copy (as Isochron Scepter does, for example), then you would need to pay Fling 's additional cost. Note that this is because it is an additional cost to cast Fling - if you copy Fling then you aren't casting it.

Oracle rulings (note that one actually deals with Fling):

8/15/2010: When Reverberate resolves, it creates a copy of a spell. You control the copy. That copy is created on the stack, so it's not "cast." Abilities that trigger when a player casts a spell won't trigger. The copy will then resolve like a normal spell, after players get a chance to cast spells and activate abilities.

8/15/2010: You can't choose to pay any additional costs for the copy. However, effects based on any additional costs that were paid for the original spell are copied as though those same costs were paid for the copy too. For example, if a player sacrifices a 3/3 creature to cast Fling, and you copy it with Reverberate, the copy of Fling will also deal 3 damage to its target.

I don't know the specific ruling, but you don't need to pay the additional cost. The additional cost is to cast FLING. You are not casting Fling . You are casting Reverberate , which has no additional casting cost. The copy will also do 4 damage.
