Respond to Recurring Nightmare

Asked by Qomputer 13 years ago

My Opponent has a Birds of Paradise on the battlefield and a Recurring Nightmare .In his first Main Phase he wants to sacrafise the Birds of Paradise , return the Recurring Nightmare to his hand and return a card:Gaea's Revenge from the graveyard. Is it possible for me to respond to his Recurring Nightmare ability by using a Terror on his Birds of Paradise ? Or is it to late to responde, since sacrafising is part of the ability's cost?

Sub-Question: If it is possible to Terror the Birds of Paradise , does Recurring Nightmare still goes to his hand?

You're right, the sacrifice and returning Nightmare to it's owner's hand are the cost to activate the ability, so by the time you can respond to Nightmare the Birds is already dead. If you respond to the casting of Nightmare by killing the bird you can stop it going off. Otherwise, if it's your opponent's turn they can pull priority and activate Nightmare anyway.

second scenario:Opponent casts Recurring Nightmare , then he casts a Birds of Paradise .

Can I use Terror on the Birds of Paradise before he is able to use the Recurring Nightmare ?
Or is there no way I can come between a Recurring Nightmare and his ability ?

You won't be able to cast Terror on the bird in response to it's casting since it isn't actually on the battlefield until it resolves. As soon as the Birds are on the battlefield your opponent can sacrifice it to Nightmare. The only ways to deny Recurring Nightmare is to either deny it its food source and destroy all your opponent's creatures before it's on the battlefield OR use a spell like Stifle or Bind to counter the ability.
