Regarding Trostani, Archangel of Thune and multiple creatures entering at the same time.
Asked by Trekario 11 years ago
Say I have a Trostani, Selesnya's Voice and a Archangel of Thune on the field and I was to play a card like Evangel of Heliod would I gain the life from Trostani all in one instance and only get one Archangel trigger or would each token give me a separate trigger for the +1/+1 counters?
But don't all the tokens still enter the battlefield as 1/1 creatures? Regardless of the Thune tokens, which can only be applied after they have entered the zone and because of that Trostani will only give you 1 life for each token in this case.

Trostani, Selesnya's Voice and Archangel of Thune are on the battlefield. You cast Evangel of Heliod and it resolves.
Now Trostani, Selesnya's Voice and Evangel of Heliod abilities both trigger and you're allowed to stack them however you see fit. You want the tokens to get that extra trigger so you stack them Trostani, Selesnya's Voice on first and Evangel of Heliod on top. Evangel of Heliod ETB trigger resolves and 6 1/1 tokens enter the battlefield, assuming no other white devotion. 6 new and separate Trostani, Selesnya's Voice triggers go on the stack still above the original one for Evangel of Heliod .
The first Trostani, Selesnya's Voice trigger for a 1/1 resolves. You gain 1 life and a Archangel of Thune trigger goes on the stack. Archangel of Thune trigger resolves and everything gets a +1/+1 counter. The second Trostani, Selesnya's Voice trigger for a 1/1 resolves. You gain 1 life and a Archangel of Thune trigger goes on the stack. Archangel of Thune trigger resolves and everything gets a +1/+1 counter. You do this 4 more times and then finally the last time for Evangel of Heliod originally entering the field.
You now have Trostani, Selesnya's Voice , Archangel of Thune , Evangel of Heliod and 6 1/1s on the field. You gained a total of 9 life and each creature has 7 +1/+1 counters on it.

@Slycne: You'd gain more than 9 life. You have seven creatures. From the tokens, you'll get 1+2+3+4+5+6, then from the Evangel you'd gain 7, for a total of 28 life if you stack it all in the "optimal" order (my math may be off, but that's the general idea. It's best to do this kind of thing step-by-step when it happens).
When the Archangel puts a counter on a token, you'll gain more life for that token when Trostani's ability for it resolves because the token is no longer 1/1.

Sorry, yeah, my math was off. You'd gain 9 for the Evangel because it has a base of 3 toughness.

Drilnoth Ah that's right. I was forgetting to factor that Trostani, Selesnya's Voice checks toughness on resolution of her ability.

Remember that effects that require information about the game state check that information on resolution. The toughness values are determined when the abilities resolve, not when the trigger. Because it's an on-resolution check, the abilities will see the modified toughnesses of the creatures in question.

You would gain life separately for each token. Notably, since you gain life from Trostani, the Archangel then puts counters on your creatures before the next Trostani trigger resolves, giving you more life from the next creature (since it now has a higher toughness), and so on.
