Regarding Kari Zev, and her monkey

Asked by wereotter 8 years ago

I want to make sure I understand all my triggers here in the combat phase specifically as it relates to Ragavan (the monkey Kari Zev, Skyship Raider makes when she attacks)

Do I have the opportunity to interact with Ragavan after he deals combat damage but before he's exiled, even if it's while the exile trigger is on the stack? For example if I want to let Ragavan hit my opponent and then cast Fling to do the damage again, is there a time in the combat phase when I can do that?

The combat phase consists of beginning, declare attackers, declare blockers, damage, and end steps. Most of those steps will have a certain turn-based action associated with them (such as declaring attackers), but independent of that, each of these steps will deal a round of priority.

Kari's delayed trigered ability will trigger in the end of combat step, meaning you not only get to respond to that, but you could cast spells and activate abilities with instant speed right in the combat damage step(s), before the ability even triggers. Functionally, this should rarely make a difference, but either way, you can.

So my point is I want Ragavan to deal damage, so I don't want to respond to that, but I do want to respond before he exiles with Fling or Bloodshot Cyclops. Am I understanding correctly that I can do this?

You can't respond to him dealing damage (which is a turn-based action that doesn't use the stack), but you gain priority twice after Ragavan deals damage, and before he is actually exiled:

  1. in the combat damage step, after combat damage is dealt
  2. in the end of combat step, in response to Kari's ability that exiles him triggering

In both cases, you could cast Fling or activate Bloodshot Cyclops's ability to sacrifice Ragavan, and you would get another 2 damage out of it, yes.
