Redirecting Damage To A Planeswalker
Asked by onthestack 13 years ago
Came across a situation against Sword of War and Peace and I had a planeswalker on the battlefield. My opponent dealt damage (to me) with his Champion of the Parish with Sword of War and Peace and declared to redirect the damage from the Sword of War and Peace (4 cards in my hand) to my planeswalker.
Is that possible?
It isn't possible it says THAT PLAYER in the text of W&P he hit you not your planes walker so the sword would hit you as well. (and damage = cards in hand doesn't go off if you hit the planeswalker)

Azure re-read the question damage was dealt to the person not the planeswalker. The triggered damage on the sword was redirected to the planeswalker, which is a legal move.

I am pretty sure azure is correct,
The card states "deals combat damage to a player Sword deals damage to that player equal to X" the amount doesn't matter, a planeswalker from my understanding is a completely different player.
by what you guys are saying in a 6 person game player A could attack player B and deal the damage to player C, that doesn't make very much sense. Or attack one player and use the effect of an equipment to change the effect written on the card to deal damage to a different player.

That is incorrect. You cannot redirect damage from one player to another player without using an effect that says to do so.
You CAN, however, redirect noncombat damage that you would deal to a player to a planeswalker that player controls instead. This is how it is possible to kill planeswalkers with burn spells like Lightning Bolt - since those spells can't target planeswalkers you must target the player and redirect it to his or her planeswalker.

as long as the sword-ed creature deals damage to you, the ability of the sword to deal damage can be dealt to the planeswalker.

i agree with everyone that says yes because a planeswalker is considered you that is why you can attack it directly thats why the swords effect can be redirected

That's not exactly why. It's misleading to suggest that planeswalkers are or are like players. Their only similarity is that they can be attacked.

Yes. Your opponent may choose to direct any noncombat damage from you to a planeswalker you control. Therefore, he or she may redirect the damage from the triggered ability of Sword of War and Peace from you to your planeswalker.
