Quicksilver Fountain and Cumulative Upkeep

Asked by BrotherofTarmogoyf 5 years ago

If I have Quicksilver Fountain and Glacial Chasm out, how does the cumulative upkeep work? They both trigger at upkeep and I stack them so fountain happens first, so by the time the cumulative upkeep ability resolves, since glacial chasm no longer has a cost to pay for cumulative upkeep, will the age counter just go on it with nothing else happening?

QSF resolves, making Glacial Chasm an Island -> you still have to deal with the triggered ability of the Chasm. There are two possible outcomes:

1/ You pay 2 life per counter and the island stays in play. You do not have to pay cumulative upkeep on your following turns.
2/ You elect not to pay the cumulative upkeep -> the island is sacrificed.

Triggered abilities on the stack do not care what happened to their sources. Even though Chasm is assuredly not a Chasm anymore, you still have to deal with its ability this turn. The way to avoid this is to transform it into another land before your upkeep. As a side note, all age counters will stay on the Island, so you will have to pay a hefty price to keep it if quicksilver fountain or the flood counter goes away.
