Quick qroup blocking question

Asked by nismonate81 8 years ago

A 5/3 creature attacks and is blocked by two 1/1s and a 1/4, the attacking creatures dies because the total power of defensive creatures equal toughness, but all defensive creatures die because the attacking creatures power is greater than each defensive creature, correct? And can Brutal Hordechief 's effect make it possible to make able defensive creatures group block? If so could you possibly make all able creatures block a indestructible creature? (Imagine if it had death touch too!)

TYPO *All defensive creatures die (in the first example) because the attacking creatures power is greater than the toughness of each defensive creature...

1/ The 5/3 will have to assign the combat damage to all its blockers. In the case of multiple blockers, the attacker has to assign to each blocking creature at least lethal damage before moving to the next one. SO in your example two things can happen:

  • The 5/3 assigns 5 damage - 2 to the 2 1/1s and 3 to the 1/4. The 1/4 lives.

  • The 5/3 assigns 5 damage - 1 to one of the 1/1s and 4 to the 1/4. One of the 1/1s lives.

2/ Brutal hordechief can make all the opponents creatures (that are able to block) block a single creature as a group.

3/ You could totally make them block an indestructible creature and/or one with deathtouch or a 1/1 token to let you big guys go through.

To expand: a creature only assigns combat damage equal to its power. If there are multiple blocking creatures or if the attacking creature has trample, the damage may be divided among the creatures/player who would receive it, but you may still only deal a total amount of combat damage equal to your creature's power. You don't hit each creature for the full amount.

Using Brutal Hordechief 's effect does it matter if let's say 5 creatures with 2/2 or stronger are forced to group block Hand of Silumgar do they all still die even though he is only 2/1?

Like Epochalyptik said, a creature assigns an amount of combat damage equal to its power. On its own, Hand of Silumgar has 2 power, and can only assign 2 combat damage total. Damage assignment has to be in whole numbers so if it were blocked by 5 2/2s then it would only be able to kill 2 of them at the most.
