question about metal craft.

Asked by drhumbra 13 years ago

I am playing a deck based aroud metal craft.

I have a Rusted Relic , along with a Alpha Myr that is equipped with Darksteel Plate .

My opponent theh cast Mind Control on the Rusted Relic .

Next turn, my opponent casts another Mind Control on the equiped Alpha Myr .

At the point in which my opponent control the equiped myr and the relic, does he have metal craft? Also, I assume if he does and I re-equip the Darksteel Plate to a creature I control, he loses it.

Is this correct?

I don't think so. Metalcraft specifies you need to control 3 artifacts. When your opponent cast mind control on alpha myr, he did not gain control of the equipment, just the creature that the equipment was equipped to. So, since you still control darksteel plate, he does not control 3 artifacts, and does not have metalcraft.

The important thing to note here is that if an equipped creature changes control, the equipment does not. Even though it will stay on the creature, the original controller will still control the equipment (and therefore can reequip a different creature).

Your opponent would need to actually gain control of all three of your artifacts to have metalcraft.

in summary, if my opponent casts Mind Control on my Alpha Myr with Darksteel Plate then he would only count the Alpha Myr towards his metalcraft count, since I still control the and can re-equip the Darksteel Plate .

Thanks guys!

There's something important about this situation that got missed: your opponent only keeps control of the Rusted Relic if he also has metalcraft while controlling it. If your opponent doesn't have metalcraft, state based actions make the Mind Control on the Relic fall off because it's attached to an illegal object (a non-creature permanent).

@rhadamanthus.

I realized that should have happened in the match after I got the initial answers to this question.

Thank you for the follow up.

Changing control of a creature doesn't make it drop any equipment attached to it. As long as that equipment is attached, the creature will get the effect from it.

Although the creature stays equipped, you have to be careful when it comes to the wording of the abilities given by the equipment.

For example, say your Sword of Feast and Famine is attached to a creature which your opponent has Mind Control led. When the equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, you will still get the benefits of the Sword. You will discard, since you are the player who has dealt the damage, but you will also untap all your lands because you are the controller of the Sword.

If Sword was worded "Equipped creature has 'whenever this creature deals combat damage...'" rather than just "whenever equipped creature deals combat damage," or if its effect stated that it applied to the controller of the creature, then the outcome changes.
