Question about Gonti, Lord of Luxury
Asked by ArchangelofWaxhaw 8 years ago
So the effect of Gonti, Lord of Luxury exiles a card from the top 4 face down. The effect reads "For as long as that card remains exiled you may look at it, you may cast it, and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any type to cast it" so does that mean even if I were to flicker Gonti or have Gonti leave the field and come back can I still cast those cards from exile regardless of the state the Gonti that exiled the card is in?
It doesn't mention that Gonti has to stay on the field for you to cast the card. So I think you can still use it even if Gonti goes away.
For reference, look at how Intet, the Dreamer is worded compared to this.

Here is a Gatherer ruling from Fiend of the Shadows, which has a near identical ability.
1/22/2011 As long as the card remains exiled, you may still play it, even if Fiend of the Shadows leaves the battlefield or changes controllers.

Edited. Misread card on first reading.
I would say yes. You'll get multiple cards you can play based on the Fiend of the Shadows ruling. Contrast that with Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge's text. You can't cast spells from one cast to the extent after recasting or flickering her because her rules don't have that same clause.

Yes.
The "For as long as that card remains exiled, you may look at it, you may cast it, and your may spend mana as though it were mana of any type to cast it." clause is part of Gonti's enters the battlefield trigger. The trigger creates a duration as part of its resolution that is not linked to Gonti in any way.

This should be in the Rules Q&A at the top of the screen next to forums. To answer your question yes since there is no activation or anything on the card to have you cast it, if he dies or leaves you still can cast the card.
