Quest for Pure Flame interaction w/ Pyromancer's Swath
Asked by StealthyGunnar 11 years ago
So I'm working on another installment of my Turn 1 Win Deck Series, this time focused around a burn deck.
I'm looking at cards like Quest for Pure Flame , Pyromancer's Swath , Mana Clash , and Grapeshot .
How do the former 2 cards interact? Let's say I activate a Lightning Bolt . If I choose to sacrifice my Quest for Pure Flame with its 4 counters while Pyromancer's Swath is on the field, does the 2 damage get added and then doubled, or does the damage get doubled with 2 added on?

@Devonin: That is incorrect. Pyromancer's Swath has a static ability that defines a replacement effect. Its second ability is the only triggered ability is has. Additionally, Quest for Pure Flame 's damage-modifying ability is a static replacement effect defined by an activated ability.
Whenever you have multiple replacement effects, the affected player (or the affected object's controller) determines the order in which they apply. In this case, the affected player is the player who would be dealt damage (your opponent). Your opponent will choose the order in which to apply the effects.
If he or she applies Pyromancer's Swath 's replacement effect, then Quest for Pure Flame 's replacement effect, Lightning Bolt will deal 10 damage.
If the effects are applied in the opposite order, then Lightning Bolt will deal 8 damage.
Oh, and you don't activate Lightning Bolt . You cast it. Activating only happens in reference to activated abilities.

Bad wording on my part. Is there any specific reason why the opponent gets to decide?

As in, why has it been ruled that in these situations, with multiple replacement effects as you say, the opponent decides in which order the spells resolve on the stack?

Because the opponent is the affected player in this case. The damage would be dealt to him/her or to a creature he/she controls.

Damn, well that throws a wrench in my plans. Thanks for the response.

Both abilities would trigger at the same time, and as you control them both, you may stack them whichever way you want.
So you'd stack Quest then Swath, then the bolt would go from 3->5 then 5->10
