Pyxis of Pandemonium ETB timing?
Asked by MagnusMTG 11 years ago
So, Pyxis of Pandemonium - silly little junk rare. I was trying it out for some 'oops-I-win' tom-foolery and was wondering about when each permanent enters the battlefield.
I'm sure there's a rule in the book about this, but I'm not sure how to look it up.
Let's say some of the permanents that get turned face up and put on the field are Purphoros, God of the Forge , Saruli Gatekeepers , and a bunch of other creatures.
Let's say the player activating the Pyxis is doing so at the end of the other player's turn and they own the Gatekeepers. The active player turns up Purphoros and several other creatures.
Which ETB first and who decides?
e.g. Could the active player order Purphoros to enter first and take advantage of the other creatures triggering the god's ability? Can the controller of Pyxis have Saruli Gatekeepers enter before then to gain life before taking the damage?
How does that work?
Thanks.

Sentence structure was a bit clunky on that but I hope you get the jist.

Enter-the-battlefield abilities trigger from the battlefield and they look at the battlefield at the time they would trigger to see if and how they will trigger. This means permanents that enter the battlefield at the same time can "see" each other enter, and can trigger off each other. Purphoros will trigger for each other creature entering under the control of that player.
When multiple triggered abilities would try to go onto the stack at the same time, the active player's triggers are put onto the stack first in the order of his choice, and then the non-active player's triggers are put onto the stack on top of those in the order of his choice. This means the non-active player's triggers will resolve first.
If I understand your example correctly (it's a little unclear), the owner of the Gatekeepers is the non-active player and the owner of Purphoros is the active player. This means the non-active player will gain life before Purphoros deals damage.

billpasdmf is incorrect on this one. I'm looking up the rule and will post again shortly...

... and Rhadamanthus provided a proper explanation as I was starting to do so.
Basically, they don't get put on the battlefield in a particular order. They all get put onto the battlefield at the exact same time, and the game rules allow each of them to "see" each other permanent entering the battlefield at the same time.

They all go onto the battlefield at the same time. Purphoros won't be on the battlefield to trigger when other creatures ETB b/c it isn't on the battlefield yet.
