Purphoros, 2HG, how does it work?

Asked by Pixonova 11 years ago

My lgs has been doing standard constructed for une past month now, and I finally got into it with a friend. We took first place last night, mainly due to our opponents taking 4 damage from Purphoros, God of the Forge whenever I threw down a creature. I was watching them just take 4 damage and didn't question it, since they did it themselves.

But in 2hg, just his effect trigger twice and hit both players? Because I know Mogis, God of Slaughter will deal 4.

The ability on Purphoros won't trigger twice but as part of the ability's resolution each opponent takes damage. In 2HG each player is still a distinct player even though they are part of a team with certain shared aspects.
This means that the ability on Puprhoros will see two opponents. With Mogis it's a little different in that even though the opposing team has only a single shared upkeep step it is still the upkeep step for each opponent, this will make Mogis trigger twice.
This distinction is only relevant if you have something that interacts with triggered abilities. If one of your opponents would cast Stifle for exampl, with Purphoros they would negate all of the damage, but with Mogis they would only negate half of the damage (one trigger). Same goes with Strionic Resonator . With resonator you could douple the damage from Purphoros but only add 2 more from Mogis.
