Psionic gift with deathtouch vs retraction helix

Asked by giantfish2003 10 years ago

Ok so my opponent on his turn plays a psionic gift on his tidehollow strix, can I play retraction helix on my crypto plasm and tap him to return the tidehollow strix to his hand before he could tap for death touch damage?

It depends on when exactly you're doing it. If you respond while Psionic Gift is still a spell on the stack, then Tidehollow Strix will go back to your opponent's hand before it can get the ability from Gift. If you wait until after Gift has resolved and is attached to Strix, then it has the ability, and it's too late to interrupt.

Please link the cards, it makes answering easier:
Psionic Gift
Retraction Helix
Cryptoplasm
Tidehollow Strix

The player plays Psionic Gift on his main phase, I then play Retraction Helix in response targeting Cryptoplasm, can I tap it and return Tidehollow Strix before psionic gift resolves/or before he can tap his creature to do cytoplasm death touch damage?

Where do I find out how to link the cards?

The link to "Formatting tips" at the bottom of the page explains it all. The most important thing to know is to use double square brackets around the name of a card to turn it into a link.

Sorry, I didn't completely answer your question.

  • So Psionic Gift is on the stack, and you play Retraction Helix . Assuming no one has any responses to that, Helix resolves and your Cryptoplasm gets an ability.
  • Everyone gets another chance to respond before Gift will start resolving, so you're allowed to activate Cryptoplasm targeting Tidehollow Strix . If no one has any responses to that, the ability resolves and Strix gets bounced.
  • Finally, if no one has any more responses, Gift tries to start resolving but gets countered by the rules instead (its only target is illegal).

At the bottom of the "Answer" box there's a link for the Comment Tutorial that walks you through it. It's nicely done.

The way you spelled it out, yes you could do it that way. The Tidehollow Strix would be returned to his hand before Psionic Gift resolves, since your Retraction Helix was cast more recently, and you activated the ability it granted the Cryptoplasm before Psionic Gift resolved. The stack works on a LIFO basis (last in, first out) so the spell most recently cast or the ability most recently activated happens first.

Psionic Gift would "fizzle" and go to the graveyard because its target no longer is in play when it tries to resolve, and it requires a valid target.

The only possible wrinkle would be that Cryptoplasm needs to not have summoning sickness.
