prismatic omen and conversion

Asked by mastablacka 13 years ago

i run a rakdos edh and my friend runs white angels. i played a prismatic omen, that way i can use my valakut to its fullest(yes im a dick, but thats beside the point), he played conversion which says that mountains are considered plains but prismatic omen says my lands are all basic land types. so we were wondering what happens.

plain and simple...

Conversion

Prismatic Omen

Prismatic omen states that your lands are every basic land type in addition to their other types.Since Conversion states the mountains are considered plains while it is in play, your "mountain/plains" are considered plains. This is basically a "Time stamp" issue. Whichever replacement effect hit the field first, is "booted out" and replaced by the second in this case.Sorry, but your lands are now plains if your omen was in play first. If conversion was in first, and then you played omen, they become all basic land types.

sorry, continuous effect. not replacement. and here's the rules to support the answer.

613.6. Within a layer or sublayer, determining which order effects are applied in is usually done using a timestamp system. An effect with an earlier timestamp is applied before an effect with a later timestamp.

That's interesting...

I would have thought that Prismatic Omen would still have it's effect - so that even if the mountains become plains, it is still a land you control, and will still be every basic land type, in addition to it's current types.

Also, regarding valakut, even with the omen out, would you not have to have the land in play for it to be every other type? So, if a forest comes in, then it becomes all other types, and thus you haven't played a mountain? Or is it a case of valakut's ability goes on the stack, and when it checks the land, it sees that it is also a mountain. Just curious, because playing a land isn't a stackable action.

Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle can only ever trigger for Mountainfall. However, AoE abilities like Prismatic Omen affect permanents even as they enter the battlefield, so the Valakut will see a Mountain entering the battlefield and trigger.

It's like how if you control an Honor of the Pure and play Elite Vanguard , that Vanguard will enter as a 3/2 and not a 2/1 first.

Ok, cool. What about the first part of my comment though bud, can you answer that please? Does the omen still affect even if conversion comes out after???

Thanks.

Elmarias already answered that part. Type-changing effects are applied in layer 4. When multiple effects would apply in the same layer, the oldest effect applies first as per rule 613.6.

Therefore, if Prismatic Omen is out and then Conversion is played, the Omen will apply first, then the Conversion will apply, overwriting the Omen in the process.
