Please confirm or deny my understanding of Epic Experiment

Asked by emblasochist 12 years ago

So, Epic Experiment reads Exile the top X cards of your library. For each instant and sorcery with CMC of X or less among them, you may cast that card without paying its mana cost. Then put all cards exiled this way that weren't cast into your graveyard.

My understanding of the card is a little bit shaky though my gut reaction is that I understand it correctly in that when the cards it exiles are cast, they go to the graveyard during their resolution, correct? Otherwise, the interaction with Past in Flames is none, and I just wanted to get a confirmation that I understand how the card resolves correctly.

i'm no judge, but if i understand correctly, firstly you exile them, all of them, then you cast those with CMC equal or less than X,after they resolve they go to the graveyard, but only after, cause after they are cast, they go to the stack, then resolve, then graveyard.it's they way i see it,but it's probably not correct :/

First, exile the top X cards of your library. Then, for each instant or sorcery with a cmc less than or equal to X, you may cast them without paying the mana costs. This means taking them from exile and putting them on the stack (choose modes, targets, etc.) in any order you'd like (remembering that the last card to go on the stack will be the first to resolve). Then put the remaining cards in your graveyard, then Epic Experiment finishes resolving and goes to the graveyard. Then, the instants and sorceries you chose to cast now resolve, going to the graveyard after they resolve.

Do they go to the graveyard? Epic Experiment says exile these cards, and then cast ones that fit the criteria without paying their mana cost. It does not specifically say what zone they go to after they are cast. Only the "other" cards that were exiled and not cast this way are turned to graveyard. I believe the casted exiled cards remain exiled.

I could be wrong however...

Actually, I found the answer here:

601.2 To cast a spell is to take it from where it is (usually the hand), put it on the stack, and pay its costs, so that it will eventually resolve and have its effect. Casting a spell follows the steps listed below, in order. If, at any point during the casting of a spell, a player is unable to comply with any of the steps listed below, the casting of the spell is illegal; the game returns to the moment before that spell started to be cast (see rule 715. Handling Illegal Actions). Announcements and payments can't be altered after they've been made.

So, to cast a card from exile, you take it from exile and put it on the stack.

Then, once it finishes resolving:

608.2k As the final part of an instant or sorcery spell's resolution, the spell is put into its owner's graveyard. As the final part of an ability's resolution, the ability is removed from the stack and ceases to exist.

So I was wrong :)

Correct. All instants and sorceries go the graveyard after they resolve, unless something tells them specifically otherwise (Dissipate , Time Spiral , flashback, etc.)
