Planeswalkers and Doubling Season

Asked by Tekel_Brighteyes 13 years ago

Since planeswalkers start with counters equal to their loyalty number, if I have Doubling SeasonMTG Card: Doubling Season in play, does a planeswalker come into play with twice that amount?

Yes. Doubling SeasonMTG Card: Doubling Season causes a replacement effect and doubles the counters.

Note that the season will not double the amount of counters gained when you activate their abilities. This is because placing counters on the planeswalker when you activate their ability is part of the cost and not the effect.

The planewalker or any other permanent which enters the battlefield with counters on it will enter the battlefield with twice that many counters on it instead.

GoblinsInc is correct that a planeswalker's activated abilities will not add twice the amount of loyalty counters as they are part of its activation cost.

Other abilities, such as proliferate or Gilder BairnMTG Card: Gilder Bairn's activated ability, will add twice the amount of loyalty counters to a planeswalker with Doubling SeasonMTG Card: Doubling Season in play.

Thank you all for your help. I had that in my deck and started thinking about it today. It's going to be "interesting" the next time I play.

lol Yeah, I understand I can't put double the amount on to activate an ability, however, this brings up another question. If I play Elspeth, Knight-ErrantMTG Card: Elspeth, Knight-Errant and use her first ability, would it create 2 1/1 white Soldier creature tokens?
