pithing needle interaction with top of deck and "copy" effect?

Asked by RealLifeBear 4 years ago

lets say I have Conspicuous Snoop in play, and the top card of my library is Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker . My opponent has a Pithing Needle in play, having named "Kiki".

Am I still able to use his ability with Conspicuous Snoop because its coming from Snoop and not Kiki (rules on gather for snoop says: "If an activated ability of Goblin card on top of your library references the card it’s printed on by name, treat Conspicuous Snoop’s instance of that ability as though it referenced Conspicuous Snoop by name instead"), or does pithing needle still block the combo because it still originates from Kiki? Is Kiki still the "source" referred to be Needle?

Your Conspicuous Snoop can activate the copy ability it gets from Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker . The source of an ability is the card, spell, or permanent that the ability is on. MtG is very particular with how it refers to game objects. Permanents are on the battlefield, spells are on the stack, and cards are in all other zones. To cover all three without having to say "cards, spells, and permanents with the chosen name" they just say sources. The source of the ability in your question is Conspicuous Snoop .

I also have to say, RealLifeBear, that that is a great way to get around hate for your combo.
