Pile shuffling
Asked by Argy 8 years ago
The new ruling says you can count cards into piles once each time you randomise the deck.
Does that mean you can only do it once, at the start of the match, or once before each game?
It would seem to me that you are randomising a deck after you Sideboard, so would be allowed to count cards into piles after you've done that.
According the newsest MTR (section 3.9),
"Pile shuffling alone is not sufficiently random and may not be performed other than once at the beginning of a game to count the cards in the deck."
So, in one match, you can pile shuffle no more than 3 times.

Oh no I wouldn't abuse the situation by any means.
Your rule reading is the same as mine.
I am more asking because a player was insisting tonight that you could only count cards into piles before the first game in a match.
I disagreed and he basically told me to stfu because he is a judge.
My response was, "Judges still make mistakes."

Oh, I thought it was each time you present the deck. Would someone mind linking me to an appropriate resource so that I may update myself? Thanks.
Nevermind. Found it.

I've noticed that often with Magic rules things are half heard or half understood and then become passed on to newer players.
I found reading those rules fascinating.

Each time you randomize the deck is whenever you shuffle, be it a Fetchland activation, a mulligan, or sideboard number checking. You are allowed to count the cards in your deck as many times as you shuffle, though don't do it literally every time, since people seem to get irritated by it (though there is nothing they can do about it).
