Pia and Kiran Nalaar's ability and the stack

I've got two Thopters on the field and use them plus the required mana to activate the ability of Pia and Kiran Nalaar to do damage to my Opponent's creature.
After this my Opponent casts Murderous Cut, targeting Pia and Kiran Nalaar.
Does the damage from activating their ability go through before they die?

Yes, the damage still happens.
Once activated the ability exists independently of it's source. killing Pia and Kiran Nalaar does nothing
