Phyrexian Rebirth vs Knight Exemplar

Asked by Vassile 13 years ago

If Rebirth destroys all creatures on the field, but Knight Exemplar makes all knights indestructible, would only the Exemplar get destroyed or would the entire field be wiped?

Only the Knight Exemplar would die (out of all the knights that player controls). When Phyrexian Rebirth resolves, it destroys all creatures which can be destroyed. Think of it like taking a snapshot of the game state. At that moment in time, each knight except for the Exemplar is indestructible. Therefore, each knight except for the Exemplar will survive.

Oracle ruling to back this up:

8/15/2010: If an effect would simultaneously destroy Knight Exemplar and another Knight creature you control, only Knight Exemplar is destroyed.

In addition, if there are two Knights Exemplar in play, none of the knights will be destroyed by the Rebirth, because they'd grant each other indestructibility.

This situation came up in a game for me last week, so just thought I'd mention it. My opponent had multiple knights out, then cast Day of Judgment , wiping my board but not his. I scooped :-)

I take full advantage of double or even single Exemplar interactions in my tribal knight deck. It's devastating to wipe someone's board and then still have a field of 4/4 double-strikers that can all be given protection from your answers.

were do you get the 4/4 double-strikers?
