Perplexing Chimera and Mind Control Interaction
Asked by ItchiUchiha117 11 years ago
Alright, so I think I know the answer to this already, but if I were to put a Mind Control on a Perplexing Chimera , would I be able to take control of every spell that gets cast? Or would there be a period of time that the ability would trigger for other people?
When it comes to Perplexing Chimera nothing is simple. Draugo does a good job of explaining what happens, but basically whichever effect has taken place most recently will be the one which takes precedence. Whether you ha e a Mind Control the chimera is irrelevant.

But would the effect of the Mind Control kick in and put it back under my control? I'm sure the answer is somewhere in your answer, but I really can't tell.

If an effect would take effect giving your opponent control to him/her of a creature that you have enchanted w/ Mind Control , then the newer effect will dictate who has control of the creature. There is no point that Mind Control will "kick in" and give you back control of the creature. You still control Mind Control , for the sake of things that account for auras/enchantments you conrol, but until you do something else to regain control of said creature, it will be under control of your opponent.

Every control effect is a new layer, and only the top layer does anything. The lower layers, assuming they aren't temporary effects, stick around, but don't function until a higher layer is removed.
If you had Mind Control on something, and then -they- ALSO played Mind Control on it, they'd control it since they had the newest control changing effect. If you then played Disenchant on their Mind Control , your Mind Control would again be the 'newest' control effect, so you'd get it back.

Alright, thank you for that. Guess that idea for jank won't work then. Thanks, everyone!

Control changing effects work in the layering system (I forgot which layer). There is a timestamp assosiated with each control changing effect. Perplexing Chimera itself causes a control changing effect and the effect with the newest timestamp is the one that takes effect. That's how it manages to change controllers more than once.
Let's assume that your opponent casts Mind Control targeting something else you control and you have control of Perplexing Chimera at the moment. When Mind Control is cast you get the option two switch control of it with Perplexing Chimera and reassign its target. You do so and now you target Perplexing Chimera. Rest of the stack resolves. You now have control of the Chimera and Mind Control. If you now use the Chimera to switch control with another spell your opponent casts then a new control changing effect is created with newer timestamp than the one from Mind Control and control of the Chimera goes to your opponent. Notice however that you still control Mind Control even though your opponent controls the Chimera, so effects that care about permaments you control will see the Mind Control.
