Paying ability cost: can I activate abilities in the meantime?

Asked by Warxuaroz 5 years ago

I have a Tayam, Luminous Enigma, Ashnod's Altar ,and three 0/1 Eldrazi Spawns (sacrifice this creature to add one colorless). The scions came to play after Tayam, so they all have a vigilance counter on them. Can I now, trying to pay for Tayam's ability: remove 3 vigilance counters from them, and then sacrifice them for mana? Could I sacrifice them for the altar?

You can not remove counter AND sacrifice them while activate the ability of Tayam, Luminous Enigma.

While casting a spell or activating an ability, you do have the opportunity to activate mana abilities, like those of the Scion tokens and Ashnod's Altar. However, you do this before pay any costs. If you sacrificed your Scions for mana, they wouldn't be around to pay for the counter cost of Tayam.

Relevant rules:

When activating an ability or casting a spell, after making all your choices (targets, modes, etc.), you determine the total cost (rule 601.2f), then you may activate mana abilities (rule 601.2g), then you pay the total cost in any order (rule 601.2h). (The rules for activating an ability are identical to casting a spell, other than the first step which involves actually putting it on the stack.)

As mentioned, your scions will be dead and their counters gone before you get to pay the cost.
