Path to Exile after opponent's blockers declared?

Asked by Dreno33 11 years ago

Say I swing in with some dudes, then they declare their blockers. Can I cast Path to Exile therefore their creature will not block mine?

you can cast it after you have declared attacks and before blockers are declared.

you can cast if after blockers are declared but you creature will still be considered blocked in this case. if you have trample on it you swing for full since the creature blocking is considerd a 0/0

No, as soon as a blocker is declared, the blocked creature counts as blocked, regardless of whether blockers are removed afterward or not.

The only way to get past this is with Trample, since no damage would has to be applied to a blocking creature, resulting in full damage to the dome.

No, once a creature is blocked, it remains blocked for the entire combat, even if the blocking creature(s) no longer exist.

Once blockers are declared, the attacking creatures they blocked stay blocked until the end of combat. Killing the blocker or giving the attacker flying, etc. won't change that. Your last opportunity to take an action that can affect the declaration of blockers is at the end of the declare attackers step.

you can cast Path to Exile , but the attacking creature is still blocked.

509.1h An attacking creature with one or more creatures declared as blockers for it becomes a blocked creature; one with no creatures declared as blockers for it becomes an unblocked creature. This remains unchanged until the creature is removed from combat, an effect says that it becomes blocked or unblocked, or the combat phase ends, whichever comes first. A creature remains blocked even if all the creatures blocking it are removed from combat.

Once blockers have been declared, any blocked creatures will be considered blocked for the rest of combat. Playing a removal spell like Path to Exile will not affect the fact that the attacking creature is still considered blocked.

The blocked creature won't deal any combat damage to the defending play (unless it has trample, in which case it's considered to be blocked by a creature with Toughness 0, and all its damage will get through).

what if i cast Unsummon with a creature blocking that is bigger than my attacker? will my attacker die or no?

No, if the blocker is removed from combat before damage is assigned it deals no damage nor takes damage (for example Maze of Ith could be used to save an attacker in said situation).

No, because there won't be a creature to deal damage to it when the Combat Damage step rolls around.

As long as you cast it before the combat damage step, your creature will live. Their creature won't get any damage either, but if was bigger than yours that's probably not significant anyhow (unless you have burn spells).

It's like a total ninja nest in here. Must've disturbed the dojo or something.
