Pain lands in Mono EDH
Asked by Conqueror_of_Thrones 10 years ago
This may sound like a dumb question, but since it can produce both color mana, are Pain Lands unusable in a mono colored EDH deck, since you cannot use a card that contains colors that are not your Commanders?

I did not know that was why, I always thought it was because of the actual color symbol in the card itself. Thank you for answering, and for teaching me something new.

It is because of the colored mana symbol. Mana symbols in text boxes (except those in reminder text) affect color identity.

You are correct that you can't use pain lands in mono colored EDH decks. However it isn't because they can produce off colors of mana but because the have 2 colors in their color identity. Ex. Shivan Reef has a color identity of UR but City of Brass has no color identity.
A card color identity is determined by the colored mana symbols in its text or mana cost, by CDAs that define color or by color indicators. I believe the only card with a color changing CDA is Ghostfire as all others have been errated to have color indicators.
