Order of triggers when copying Hidetsugu and Kairi

Asked by Quickspell 2 years ago

I have Hidetsugu and Kairi on the battlefield and cast, say, Clone.

From what I know, this should happen:

  1. When Clone enters the battlefield, it’s ETB trigger (that is, the copied Hidetsugu and Kairi’s ETB trigger) would go on the stack. However, before that happens the legendary rule applies as a state-based action.

  2. By choice, I send the clone to the graveyard, which will trigger the copied Hidetsugu and Kairi‘s death trigger.

During these events, when do I put the copied ETB trigger on the stack? Before or after the death trigger? I think after, so the ETB would resolve first, but I’m not sure.

You can choose the order that these triggers go onto the stack, as the first time that you’re able to add any to the stack at all is after you’ve resolved the legendary rule.

So, you can order these how you choose, depending on the current situation.

So just to clarify further on this, the legendary rule takes precedence over prettymuch anything else - and needs to be resolved before continuing with the game. If you were able to do anything with the stack, that would allow for shenanigans like sacing one of the legendaries or adding more abilities to the stack while both are in play. Hence, the legendary rule is addressed immediately before the game can continue.

Because of this, by the time you can actually add abilities to the stack, you’ll have both the etb and death triggers to add, and can choose the order or resolution freely as you choose.
