Nissa, Who Shakes the World creature lands, vigilance and attacking

Asked by timschil 4 years ago

Consider this situation I had the other night. I had two creature lands as a result of my Nissa, Who Shakes the World and was attacking with both of them along with a third creature that I had on the battlefield. After my opponent declared blockers, he was blocking my creature that was not a land, I tapped one of my Creature Lands to create white mana to cast my Divine Arrow on his blocking creature.

Two parts of this question.

1) Can I tap my vigilant creature for mana in response to his declaring blockers?

2) Will damage from my creature land still go through after I tap it for mana?

Thanks

Yes, after a creature is declared a blocker or an attack, it can be tapped down for other reasons, doing so does not remove it from combat, nor negate it's damage.

506.4b Tapping or untapping a creature that’s already been declared as an attacker or blocker doesn’t remove it from combat and doesn’t prevent its combat damage.

  1. Yes, you can tap a vigilant creature for mana in response to declaring blockers. While creatures must be untapped in order to be declared as an attacker, the rules say a change in whether tapped or not after being declared as an attacker does not change the fact the creature is attacking.

  2. Yes, the damage of a now-tapped creature will still go through. The act of tapping the creature neither removes it from combat nor does it suddenly confer the blocked status on your creature. As such, it is still an attacking and unblocked creature, and will deal damage to the player/planeswalker it is attacking.
