Nighthowler Bestow and P/T Calculation

Asked by smithkurosaki 9 years ago

Nighthowler's P/T calculation text is making me wonder if it is worth Enchanted Creature's P/T + Nighthowler's P/T (based off creatures in all graveyards) or Creatures P/T + Nighthowler's P/T applied to Creature + Nighthowler's P/T when attached as an Aura.

Text: Nighthowler and enchanted creature each get +X/+X, where X is number of creature cards in all graveyards.

My understanding is (Creature P/T+ Nighthowler P/T) + Nighthowler P/T.

As a follow up, I was reading the Gatherer's rulings earlier today, and I saw that when the enchanted creature dies, Enchanted creatures as Auras revert to Enchantment creatures (and thus remain on the field instead of going to the graveyard) Is this correct?

Your question is very confusing. Numbers would help you make a clearer point.

Let's say you have Grizzly Bears on the battlefield and there are five creature cards in all graveyards.

You enchant Grizzly Bears with Nighthowler. Grizzly Bears gets +5/+5 and is now a 7/7.

Grizzly Bears dies. Nighthowler becomes a creature and is now a 6/6 (Grizzly Bears died, so it counts toward the creatures in graveyards total).

And yes, when a bestowed creature becomes unattached from whatever object it was enchanting, it becomes an enchantment creature. This rule applies only to bestow, not generally to all enchantment creatures.

Nighthowler is written like that because it's the shortest and easiest way to explain the effect. While it's a creature its own P/T will be equal to the number of creature cards in all graveyards, and while it's an aura the enchanted creature will get a boost for creature cards in graveyards. If you bestow Nighthowler onto a Bear Cub while there are 5 creature cards in graveyards then the Cub will be a 7/7.

Yes, that rule you found is part of how Bestow works. In a normal situation an Aura will go to the graveyard if the object it's attached to goes away, but the Bestow ability lets it turn into a creature instead.

Ok, I had a feeling I might be wrong on the first part, and didn't really notice that the text was worded in a way that could be construed as the potential creature + nighthowler*2 until today.

Thanks for confirming on the enchanted creature mechanic

Note that while Nighthowler is an aura, it has no power or toughness. Therefore, giving it +X/+X does nothing.
