Mystifying Maze Exiles Commander

Asked by onthestack 13 years ago

If Mystifying MazeMTG Card: Mystifying Maze is activated while my opponent is attacking (with Zur the EnchanterMTG Card: Zur the Enchanter) does his commander get exiled and is placed back in the Commander Zone or does his commander return to the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step tapped, as the land says?

Your opponent has the option to implement the EDH replacement effect.

Option 1: You target Zur with Mystifying MazeMTG Card: Mystifying Maze's ability. When it resolves, your opponent chooses to send Zur to the Command Zone rather than allow Zur to be exiled. Zur will not return to play.

Option 2: You target Zur with Mystifying Maze's ability. When it resolves, your opponent allows Zur to be exiled as per the normal course of actions. Zur will return to play tapped at the end of the turn via a delayed triggered ability.

Note that if option 2 is chosen and you counter the delayed triggered ability that would return Zur (by using VoidslimeMTG Card: Voidslime or equivalent, let's say), then Zur stays exiled. Your opponent can't put Zur back into the CZ at that point.

A slight correction: Zur will still return to play if your opponent chooses option 1.

603.6. Trigger events that involve objects changing zones are called "zone-change triggers." Many abilities with zone-change triggers attempt to do something to that object after it changes zones. During resolution, these abilities look for the object in the zone that it moved to. If the object is unable to be found in the zone it went to, the part of the ability attempting to do something to the object will fail to do anything. The ability could be unable to find the object because the object never entered the specified zone, because it left the zone before the ability resolved, or because it is in a zone that is hidden from a player, such as a library or an opponent's hand. (This rule applies even if the object leaves the zone and returns again before the ability resolves.) The most common zone-change triggers are enters-the-battlefield triggers and leaves-the-battlefield triggers.

Mystifying MazeMTG Card: Mystifying Maze's ability will still create the delayed triggered ability to return Zur to play. The DTA will look for Zur in the Command Zone and pull it back to the field unless countered.

Note that this means Zur still went to the CZ, so it will cost 2 more to cast the next time your opponent wants to play it from the CZ.

Minor note Zur going to the CZ doesn't increase the additional cost to cast him from the CZ. It is based off of how many times he has been -cast- from the CZ, not how many times he has entered the CZ.
