Mutate and Sporadic Creatures
Asked by Omniscience_is_life 4 years ago
If I mutate onto a creature--such as a vehicle--that will cease to be a creature on end step, does the pile cease to be a creature entirely? Does it matter if I mutate underneath or above? Can I "permacrew" a vehicle, or "permanimate" an Izzet Keyrune ?
@Rhadmanthus is right, but I just have to point out a small nitpick: if you have a merged permanent with a Vehicle (let's say Gemrazer mutated on top of Thundering Chariot ), activating the crew ability will still turn the merged Gemrazer from a creature into an artifact creature for the turn. This won't matter most of the time but you never know!

It does matter what card is on top. The merged permanent has the characteristics of the topmost component, plus the abilities of everything underneath it. If the "temporary creature" in your example is on top, then the merged permanent will stop being a creature when the effect ends. If an actual creature card is on top, then the merged permanent will be a creature with those characteristics.
If a vehicle is one of the components underneath, activating the crew ability later won't do much, as the merged permanent will still only have the characteristics of whatever is on top, not the ones given on the vehicle card.
