Multiple replacement effects on board

Asked by pedroedmarcos 1 year ago

Hey there,

How do multiple replacement effects on the board works? Let's say I have Sylvan Library that will give me multiple draw, Underrealm Lich and a Golgari Grave-Troll that as dredge on de yard. How my draw will work out? May I choose which replacement to use?

You get to choose for each draw. If multiple replacement effects could modify how an event affects a player or an object, then the affected player or controller of the affected object decides which one to apply. The fact that Underrealm Lich's effect is mandatory doesn't mean it automatically takes precedence over the optional Dredge effect from Golgari Grave-Troll.

It's not part of your question, but just to make sure it's clear: because there aren't any cards actually being "drawn" (they'll all get replaced by either the Lich or dredging), you don't have to choose any cards to either pay 4 life or put back from Sylvan Library's effect.

Wow, that's strong. So In this case I would not have to pay any life, and all 3 draws would be replaced?

Yes, that's how it would work. Because these effects replace card "draws" with a different event that isn't a "draw", there are no "cards in your hand drawn this turn" to choose from when you get to that part of Sylvan Library's effect.
