Meren, choose on resolve or before?

So I'm not quite sure about how these 2 cards interact:Meren of Clan Nel Toth + Reito Lantern

scenario:
-entering opponents endstep
-opponent wants to reanimate/return to hand creature "X"
-I respond to that by activating the lantern targeting "X"

does X go on bottom of my opponents library and his triggered ability just ends up doing noting? or does he get to choose another creature?

Meren's ability targets so as part of the ability being put on the stack a target must be chosen. Once Meren's ability is on the stack you can respond to it with the lantern. The lantern will resolve first putting the card on the bottom. When Meren's ability resolves it will no longer have a valid target and will fizzle.
