Mana Question - How old is my memory ?

Asked by DrummerGarrett 3 years ago

Hello Internet, I started playing back in 7th edition. I know now that modern rules (Comp Rules:106.4.) state that "... Each player’s mana pool empties at the end of each step and phase."

In my memory (and in my casual house rules), I'm used to Mana staying in the Mana Pool until the end of turn.

I was wondering when exactly this changed to the modern format I and most people, are now aware of ? Either by set or by year... Maybe this is just how we always played back in the day.

Please let me know, Thanks, Garrett

It sounds like you're remembering a house rule. There was a period of time when mana could carry through steps in the same phase (for example: you used to be able to get mana from Thran Turbine during your upkeep step and spend it on Well of Knowledge during your draw step, since it was all part of the Beginning Phase), but there was never a time when mana stayed up all the way through the end of the turn.

Yeah, the original mana rule was mana carried to the end of each phase, but you took 1 damage per unspent mana when it drained. Around Magic 2010 (I think?) they changed it to mana draining at the end of each step, but no mana burn.

I'm sure a lot of people playing casually didn't get the whole drain at phases thing and just did drain at the end of the turn, since that's pretty intuitive. I'm wanting to say I used to think that when I was new.
