Magma Jet Scry 2 on illegally targeted creature

Asked by Slayer_Sabre 10 years ago

Today at a tournament I was playing against some guy that had a really aggressive control deck. My opponent targets my Ajani's Pridemate with Magma Jet and I use God's Willing or Feat of Resistance to give my creature protection from red. I know that by giving my creature protection from red it would be an illegal target for Magma Jet. My opponent still Scryed 2 although the spell was supposed to fizzle out and be countered.

So my question is was my opponent allowed to Scry 2 or not in this situation?

I believe yes because the spell was cast and you scry upon casting it

Nope, scrying is part of the spells resolution. Spells are countered if all targets become illegal.

Normally its good to check the official Gatherer page. Also remember to link cards that you are looking at. Magma Jet

" Scry appears on some spells and abilities with one or more targets. If all of the spell or abilitys targets are illegal when it tries to resolve, it will be countered and none of its effects will happen. You wont scry."

First, rules questions belong in the Q&A, which is linked int he header bar. I can't move this thread to the Q&A, so I'm moving it to BE.

Second, link all cards in your question.
Ajani's Pridemate
Magma Jet
Gods Willing
Feat of Resistance

Third, always check the Gatherer rulings before asking a question. From Magma Jet 's rulings:

9/15/2013: Scry appears on some spells and abilities with one or more targets. If all of the spell or abilitys targets are illegal when it tries to resolve, it will be countered and none of its effects will happen. You wont scry.

You scry during Magma Jet 's resolution. If Magma Jet is countered, you don't scry.

@DSHoyt: If scry were an on-cast ability, it would be worded "when you cast ~, scry 2," hence the name "on-cast ability."

And next time you're at a tournament and something questionable happens, call a judge. Even if you're pretty sure you're wrong, at least they can explain why you're wrong. =)

@Epochalyptik I did check the rules for magma jet but the site I went to it was unclear on the ruling and used the alternate-art/previous-print version of the card. Also I wasn't sure about how to link the cards and I didn't see a Q&A thread on here when I was trying to find a proper place for posting this thread.

What site were you using? The Oracle text and rulings for any given card are the same for all of its printings.

Also, the formatting guide is linked at the bottom of the page.
