Lightpaws and On Thin Ice, what would happen

Asked by StupidCupid333 3 years ago

if I tutor On Thin Ice with my Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice, it has to target light paws, but light paws isn't a snow land. So would it exile an opposing creature forever?

It would not exile the creature for forever. Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice is an illegal object for On Thin Ice because On Thin Ice specifically states to 'enchant snow land you control'.

From the official rules: 303.4c If an Aura is enchanting an illegal object or player as defined by its enchant ability and other applicable effects, the object it was attached to no longer exists, or the player it was attached to has left the game, the Aura is put into its owner’s graveyard. (This is a state-based action. See rule 704.)

So the actions that would happen is that On Thin Ice would ETB, you would exile target creature, you would attach On Thin Ice onto Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice, the game sees the enchanting of an illegal object, you would put On Thin Ice into your graveyard, and the exiled creature would re-enter the battlefield.

veritablecvn: pretty sure it wouldn't work like that either. i don't think light-paws could even tutor up an aura that can't enchant it to begin with. and i certainly don't think it would just attach itself anyway just to immediately fall off.

You're both partly right. I had to look this up when Light-Paws was previewed in relation to Curses. Light-Paws can search for any Aura, but since she's not a legal target for Curses or On Thin Ice, the "put that card into the battlefield attached to Light-Paws" part is an illegal action and cannot be taken. The Aura will just stay in your library.

DragonWolf420 is correct. From the NEO Release Notes:

- If the Aura card you find can't be attached to Light-Paws for any reason, it stays in your library and does not enter the battlefield.

Okay, sounds good! My mistake and thank you all for the correction. I didn't see the release notes when I was researching this morning.
