Legendary Rule and Interactions

Asked by Zeondragon 8 years ago

Ok, so when i was taught how to play magic, I was told that you cannot have 2 legendary creatures that are the same. Even if they are different (Ex. Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius) Is this true? And also does the legendary rule apply with a legendary creature and their Planeswalker alter? (Ex. Xenagos, God of Revels and Xenagos, the Reveler)

The legend rule only cares about whether you control two or more legendary permanents with the same English name. It doesn't care about cards that represent the same character in the game's lore. Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind plus Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius is fine. Two of either is a problem, and you'll have to choose one and place the rest into their owner's graveyard.

Note that the legend rule is so named because it doesn't care about nonlegendary permanents, including planeswalkers. There's a separate planeswalker uniqueness rule that cares about planeswalker subtypes (e.g. "Jace," or "Xenagos") and otherwise functions the same way as the legend rule.

tl;dr: The game's rules are entirely divorced from the game's lore. Players are neither forced nor expected to know the game's storyline in order to play.
