Kira, Great Glass-Spinner with Flash

Asked by RussischerZar 11 years ago

If I target a creature from someone with Murder and that opponent responds by playing Kira, Great Glass-Spinner with flash, does the Murder get countered?

I thought not, since the Murder already targeted the creature, but my opponent thought otherwise.

Anyone can clarify this?

You are correct. The ability Kira, Great Glass-Spinner grants to other creatures only triggers when they become a target of a spell or ability. This only happens when targets are first declared after activation of an ability or casting a spell.

As far as I know the targeting happens immediately, outside of the stack. But I'm sure somebody will be about with the actually rulings here shortly. =]

You and Arachnarchist are correct. Murder targets as soon as it as cast, and goes on the stack already having targeted the creature. Then Kira, Great Glass-Spinner gets flashed in. You opponent's creature would gain the ability from Kira, Great Glass-Spinner now, AFTER Murder targets. Therefore, Murder would not get countered, and your opponent's creature would die.

Would it be possible to play Kira on the stack as Murder is cast, before a target is selected? Or is the targeting instantaneous and unable to be responded to?

@Darkness1835 - Targeting happen as part of a spell being cast. There is no room for an opponent to break in anywhere in that process.

To expound on what KrazyCaley said, no one can play spells or activate abilities during the casting of a spell. Once a player begins casting a spell (which usually starts with tapping for mana and/or the declaration of what you're casting) no one has priority until that player finishes casting that spell entirely, which includes choosing targets and modes.

For example, I was once in a 2 headed giant game where my teammate went to cast Hex while our opponents had only 4 creatures out and we also had four, so two of ours had to be targeted. One of the opponents claimed to sack Qasali Pridemage before targeting to force us to target another one of our creatures. He became somewhat irritated when I told him that it did not work that way.

well as to that

he could sac his pridemage to get the ability on the stack before your hex resolved. he just wouldn't be able to do it in the way that he stated.
