Killing Mutavault
Asked by GoofyFoot 11 years ago
So I ran into a wierd interaction the other day. my buddy attacked with a Mutavault , which I blocked with my Phyrexian Crusader . he then played Mutagenic Growth on his mutavault, making it a 4/4. Enter combat, Crusader hits mutavault for 2 first strike, and brings it down to a 2/2. it kills crusader, but the issue we had was end of turn, does mutavault die, or just turn back into a land? which happens first?

EOT effects wear off simultaneously, not in any particular order. When all effects are handled, Mutavault will be a noncreature land with two -1/-1 counters on it (which means it will die as a state-based action the next time it is animated).

@williamgp99: That's incorrect.
Phyrexian Crusader is a 2/2 first strike infect, and Mutavault is a 4/4. There's no way Phyrexian Crusader can deal 4 damage to Mutavault .
During the first combat damage step, Phyrexian Crusader will deal 2 infect damage to Mutavault , reducing Mutavault to a 2/2.
During the second combat damage step, Mutavault will deal 2 damage to Phyrexian Crusader , killing it.
At the end of the turn, Mutavault will become a noncreature land with two -1/-1 counters on it.

Huh. Read Phyrexian Crusader as double strike. Sorry !

The Mutavault would die. It would be a 4/4 with 4 -1/-1 counters on it, so the next time state-based actions are checked, it would die. (As a sidenote, your Phyrexian Crusader would also die.
