Jackal Pup and Lifelink - post mortem damage

Asked by Phobophile 11 years ago

I have a Jackal Pup , he has a Lifelink on him.I attack, my opponent blocks, let's say with a Savannah Lions

so as a result, i gain two life, they both die, and Jackal Pup 's ability triggers.do i take damage from the ability, since the Jackal Pup does not have lifelink anymore?

would it make a difference if Jackal Pup was gaining lifelink from some other source, such as via Vault of the Archangel ?

It makes no difference where the lifelink came from. Yes you will gain the life. Refer to the 'last known information' rule:

413.2f If an effect requires information from the game (such as the number of creatures in play), the answer is determined only once, when the effect is applied. If the effect requires information from a specific object, including the source of the ability itself, the effect uses the current information of that object if it hasnt changed zones;

otherwise, the effect uses the last known information the object had before leaving the zone it was expected to be in.

There are two exceptions: (1) if an effect deals damage divided among some number of creatures or players, the amount and division were determined as the spell or ability was put into the stack (see rule 402.6), and (2) static abilities cant use last known information (see rule 412.5). If the ability text states that an object does something, its the object as it exists (or as it most recently existed) that does it, not the ability.

You would still take damage from Jackal Pup , regardless of its lifelink ability. The result, however, is that it would deal two damage to you and you would gain two life, resulting in a net life change of zero. This is important for cards that care about whether a player was damaged in the current turn or gained life in the current turn. It wouldn't matter how Jackal Pup gained lifelink, either. The game will always use last known information (LKI) to determine the values and qualities of any ability whose source has changed zones. The game will "remember" that your Jackal Pup had lifelink, even though it is not on the battlefield at the time its ability resolves.
