is this an infinite combo?

Asked by K1LR0Y 9 years ago

ok so does Launch the Fleet and Battlefield Thaumaturge cause an infinite combo? the strive on Launch the Fleet states that it costs 1 more to CAST for each creature it targets and Battlefield Thaumaturge states Each instant and sorcery spell you cast costs 1 less to CAST for each creature it targets. so would that make a loop of being able to "infinitely" target creatures and "infinitely" get 1/1's tapped and attacking?!

Not quite. Launch the Fleet and other strive cards can only target each creature once. While Battlefield Thaumaturge DOES make additional targets of Launch the Fleet free, he does not allow you to target a creature multiple times.

No, not at all. For several reasons.

You only get the tokens from Launch the Fleet when you attack in the declare attackers combat step. Launch the Fleet is a sorcery, so you can only cast it in your main phase.

The number of targets is a set amount when you cast a spell like Launch the Fleet . At no point after you define that amount of targets can you change that amount.

By the time you actually get any tokens from Launch the Fleet , the spell has long resolved.

Can you target a creature twice with Titan's Strength ? No. Same with Strive cards. It doesn't say it on the card, but that's the hidden baggage of the rules.

Also, from the great Matt Tabak himself (Rules Manager for Magic) "Although you can target any number of creatures with [Insert Strive Spell Here], you can't target a single creature with it more than once."

So you know: an object can only be chosen as multiple targets of a spell/ability if the text of that spell/ability uses the word "target" multiple times. This is why Common Bond can be used to put either one +1/+1 counter on each of two creatures or two counters on just one creature. Launch the Fleet and the other Strive cards only use the word "target" once.
