Is it possible to landfall without a land?
Asked by Drahydra 9 years ago
Say I have a Conspiracy or Xenograft in play. If I name "land" to be the creature type these enchantments provide, will creatures entering the battlefield trigger Landfall? In the same vein, could I name "artifact" and trigger an effect looking for artifacts to enter, such as Glassdust Hulk's? I don't think so, but a friend of mine is adamant on this.
For reference, this distinction is fully described in rule 205 of the comprehensive rules, which also lists all of the available types.

To be completely clear: when cards ask you for a "creature type" they are actually asking you for a subtype that can be applied to creatures. The same is true for "Land Types", "Arctifact Types", "Enchantment Types", "Planeswalker Types" or "Spell Types".
It's a bit confusing, it's mostly done because in almost all situation you are being asked for subtypes and not types.

So to clarify, effects like Landfall check for the type of the card, and ignore the subtype entirely?

No. They check for whatever type or subtype is specified. It's just that "land" is not a creature type, so you can't pick it with Conspiracy or Xenograft.

Land and Artifact are both card types, not creature types, so they cannot be named with Conspiracy. Creature types are things like "Golem"; on a card's typeline, they are always printed after the dash.
