Is Gideon Blackblade a creature in all zones?
Asked by Kathoran 6 years ago
If Gideon Blackblade is put into a graveyard, will it still be a creatuer on my turn? Thus, could a return target creature card return him to my hand? Thanks in advance. Also, bad at hypertexting or whatever, here is gideons card in the gatherer... https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=460940

You can use double square brackets to link to cards for the pop-up view, like so:
Gideon Blackblade
Gideon's first ability is a static ability. Static abilities only function while the object is on the battlefield unless it states otherwise, or the ability could logically function in a zone other than the battlefield.
In the case of Gideon Blackblade 's static ability, it says that when it's your turn, Gideon is a creature. "Creature" in this case means a creature permanent on the battlefield (on the stack it would be a "creature spell" and in any other zone it would be a "creature card"). Therefore the ability does not logically function in any zone other than the battlefield, and there is no line of text stating that Gideon is a creature card or spell elsewhere, so his static ability only functions on the battlefield.
In short, you can not use a "return target creature" card to recover him from the battlefield. In the graveyard, Gideon Blackblade is a planeswalker only, no matter whose turn it is.
