Interaction between Melek, Izzet Paragon and Eternal Dominion
Asked by canterlotguardian 10 years ago
If I have Melek, Izzet Paragon on the field and I cast Eternal Dominion off topdeck, does that mean both copies get exiled and I can then cast Dominion twice each upkeep? (I'm assuming whatever answer I get would apply to any kind of spell copy, like Increasing Vengeance or Howl of the Horde, as well.)
Found your answer I think. "502.44a Epic represents both a static ability and a delayed triggered ability. "Epic" means, "For the rest of the game, you cant play spells," and At the beginning of each of your upkeeps, copy this spell except for its epic ability. If the spell has any targets, you may choose new targets for the copy. See rule 503.10."
So when you cast it and copy it, you'll copy all characteristics of the spell which includes the Epic. However, as epic partially works rules wise only because of the trigger (the trigger being that you *cast the spell) you'll only get one a turn because you don't cast copies of spells.

Eternal Dominion will be copied, and you'll get two new copies of it on each of your subsequent upkeeps. You won't be able to cast other spells, per the epic ability.
If you copy Increasing Vengeance, you will only get the baseline effect from the copy, even if you copied an Increasing Vengeance that was cast from a graveyard. The copy isn't cast from anywhere, so it won't apply the bonus effect.
Howl of the Horde just cares whether you attacked with a creature this turn. If you did, then raid is true for all raid effects. If you didn't, then raid is not true for any raid effects.

Oh sorry. This was a question about an interaction I was thinking about putting into my Melek EDH deck, so that's why I put it in the Commander category.

@ Epochalyptik I'm sorry, I meant would that answer be true regardless of how I copied Eternal Dominion. Maybe that was a bit unclear.

@iLikeDirt: That is incorrect. Epic doesn't care whether you cast the spell that has epic, and it doesn't instruct you to cast anything afterward. If a spell has epic as it resolves, then you can't cast spells for the rest of the game, and you will copy the epic spell on each of your following upkeeps. The copies are created on the stack and are not cast.

Thanks for the clarification Epoch, I wasn't entirely sure on that one. Its definitely a weird rules interaction that I hope to god I never have to actually deal with...

Just as future reference, normally this would go in the Rules Q&A which is linked up at the top bar :]
As for your answer, I know you would obviously cast it twice the first time.... but man thats a weird one.
