Infinite Planeswalker Ability

Asked by mozerdozer 13 years ago

Rule 212.9f Each planeswalker has a number of activated abilities. A player may play an activated ability of a planeswalker only during a main phase of his or her turn, when he or she has priority and the stack is empty, and only if none of its activated abilities have been played that turn. The cost to play an activated ability of a planeswalker is to put on or remove from that planeswalker a certain number of loyalty counters, as shown by the loyalty symbol in the abilitys cost. An ability with a negative loyalty cost cant be played unless the planeswalker has at least that many loyalty counters on it.

This rule says that the ability's of planeswalkers are activated abilities and that a planeswalker can only use an ability once per turn. But... what if a non-planeswalker has their activated abilities? This probably seems impossible, but it is not.Myr Welder taps to imprint Molten-Tail Masticore . Then, using the Masticore's first ability, it exiles Scrib Nibblers . Then because you exiled Scrib Nibblers using the ability of Myr Welder, it now has its abilities as well. After this, all that is done is tapping Myr Welder to exile the top card of my own library where I know a planeswalker is, either using scry, Noxious Revival , etc. Now Myr Welder has exiled a planeswalker and thus would get all of its activated abilities, which according to the above rule are considered activated abilities and thus are acquired by Myr Welder . However, it says the planeswalker may only use one of their abilities per turn, but it's not a planeswalker. ALso the end of the rule says a planeswalker can only use a negative costing ability if it has at least that much loyalty, but again, it is not a planeswalker using the ability. So if I get a planeswalker exiled with Myr Welder , can I use the abilities as much as I want and negative ones as well?

i would've thought that you can do all the exiling but does scrib nibblers exile the card /with/ it (like oblivion ring) or is it just plain old exiling it (like path to exile). otherwise i would've thought you could only do it once every turn like the rules say because otherwise you could use loads of other activated abilities in the same way which are only supposed to be done each turn (steel hellkite)

interesting question though. You could break Karn very easily if you can do this.....

Steel Hellkite 's ability specifically relates it to the ability, not the card. It says "use this ability only once per turn", not "Steel Hellkite can only use this ability once per turn."

I think your Rule book might be out of date, the current version (Updated June 17th, 2011) shows no rule 212.

606.3. A player may activate a loyalty ability of a permanent he or she controls any time he or she has priority and the stack is empty during a main phase of his or her turn, but only if no player has previously activated a loyalty ability of that permanent that turn.

So, no, you can't activate more than one each turn, even if it isn't a planeswalker activating them.

Also,

606.5. A loyalty ability with a negative loyalty cost cant be activated unless the permanent has at least that many loyalty counters on it.

So you could build up the loyalty to use a big negative ability, but not just use it right off the bat.

I was using the rules from mtg salvation wiki, I guess before they changed the word planeswalker to permanent. I don't know why they did that since this is the only way to get a non-planeswalker their abilities.

607.1. An object may have two abilities printed on it such that one of them causes actions to be taken or objects to be affected and the other one directly refers to those actions or objects. If so, these two abilities are linked: the second refers only to actions that were taken or objects that were affected by the first, and not by any other ability.

Pretty sure this applies to Myr Welder: it's abilities are linked, it only gets the activated abilities of whatever you exile with it's first ability. If they ever print an Artifact Planeswalker you're in the money (and the whole game is broken), but otherwise there is no way for Myr Welder to gain loyalty abilities.

Siegfried is correct. More specifically --

607.2a If an object has an activated or triggered ability printed on it that instructs a player to exile one or more cards and an ability printed on it that refers either to the exiled cards or to cards exiled with [this object], these abilities are linked. The second ability refers only to cards in the exile zone that were put there as a result of an instruction to exile them in the first ability.

the Myr Welder specificly says it only gets the abilitys of cards it exiles its self not all exiled cards

"Myr Welder hass all activated abilities of all cards exiled WITH IT."

i dont think anything can use a planeswalkers ability
