How much of Valakut's damage does Intervention Pact stop?

So here's the situation:
One player has seven lands in play. He then casts Scapeshift. It resolves and he sacrifices all his land to get Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and six Mountains. Valakut's ability triggers six times. In response, his opponent casts Intervention Pact targeting Valakut.
How much damage is prevented, all 18 or just 3? Me and my friends eventually decided it was just 3, but I wanted a second opinion, just in case.

First, Intervention Pact doesn't rarget anything.
Each instance of Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle's ability is a separate instance of damage. Intervention Pact will only prevent the damage from one instance. So just 3 damage is prevented.
